"The project is on NATO's table" - Rama: The new port in Porto Romano will take Albania to another level
Regarding the debates on the construction of the new commercial and military port in Porto Romano, Prime Minister Rama has described the project as a strategic initiative of importance for Albania and the region.
According to the Prime Minister, the government has the obligation to reorganize the country's port network and change the urban function of the city of Durrës, transferring the commercial port from the current area to Porto Romano and paving the way for the city's tourist development. He stressed that the project aims to increase the country's logistical and processing capacities, in accordance with European Union and NATO standards.
"Now, we are, not in the right, but in our duty to reorganize the country's port network, to change the urban function of the Durrës area; to save the second largest city in the country and the first tourist city of Albania on the coastline from gangrene right in the middle of its urban organism, which is the old port; to increase our logistical and geopolitical processing capacities, complying with the standards of the European Union and NATO through the construction of a new strategic node for, not just Albania, but for the region and for the functioning of Corridor 8 and in the meantime, all of this is drowned out by the river of nonsense that Albanians are forced to face every day, every hour, every minute, whenever they have contact with 700 political and media pots," Rama said.
Among other things, the Prime Minister stated that the new port in Porto Romano is directly related to the development of the regional logistics network and the functioning of Corridor VIII and that it is under review by NATO structures.
"The new port in Porto Romano is not just an infrastructure project. I repeat, it is a strategic regional and European project linked to the vital functioning of Corridor 8 and other logistical nodes, including the dry ports of Pristina and Skopje. As I emphasized in the past days, in this process there has been, as the cycles of the steam of the media pots rise, no concerns expressed by our allies, neither by the United States nor by the European Union, on the contrary, the project designed by the largest company in the world, with an undisputed reputation, Royal Haskoning, is on the NATO table. It has passed all the technical filters and now expects to enter, together with the group of several other large projects, into the political filter precisely because it is a project with a considerable geopolitical value, but of course, I have said and I repeat that not everyone wants this new port, not everyone welcomes it ," the prime minister declared.
While he acknowledged that the project has encountered difficulties, including the withdrawal of a company that was close to signing the contract due to rising costs, he stressed that the government will continue with a new plan for its implementation.
