Irrigation intervention plan in Myzeqe - Lake Thana, "feeds" 40 thousand hectares with water for 70 years
The Thane water reservoir, one of the most important works that "feeds" over 40 thousand hectares of water in Myzeqe, has a great impact on the development of agriculture. But the increase in cultivated areas and the need for irrigation has raised the challenge of finding a favorable solution for all sectors interested in this work, which is entering its 70th year of operation.
A working group led by Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Anila Denaj, has begun work to address these challenges and draft a detailed plan for water management and resolving the irrigation issue in this area.
"Lake Thana has had a major impact on the development of agriculture in Myzeqe. Over the past few years, the cultivated areas have tripled, which has significantly increased the demand for water.
"Also, the operation of two of the most important HPPs of the Devoll cascade, part of Albania's energy chain, has brought new challenges for the management of water resources, requiring closer coordination between the energy and agriculture sectors. We will build a rescue plan by designing a calendar of interventions, and above all to provide a final solution to the irrigation issue," said Deputy Prime Minister Balluku during the discussions.
Agriculture is one of the most important economic activities in the Myzeqesë area, in Fier. The Thanë watershed covers an area of 860 hectares, collects 65 million m3 of water and processes 132 million m3 of water that it takes from the Devoll River through the Vlashuk dam. In addition to irrigating agricultural lands, fishing is also practiced.
