30 million euros for the Durrës-Rrogozhina train - EBRD reconfirms support

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has reconfirmed its financial support for the rehabilitation of the Durrës – Rrogozhinë railway, part of the VIII railway Corridor. Through a press release, the EBRD announced that together with the European Union, they are supporting their third major railway project in Albania. This, after the Tirana – Durrës – Rinas and Vorë – Hani i Hotit lines.

According to the EBRD, the new electrified line will reduce emissions, increase regional connectivity and promote the shift from road to rail. A loan of EUR 30 million will be allocated for the project, which is an integral part of the EUR 120.5 million financing package. Meanwhile, the remaining EUR 90 million will be financed through a loan from the European Investment Bank and an EU grant, allocated through the Western Balkans Investment Framework.

According to Donald Mishaxhiu, EBRD Regional Head of Infrastructure for the Western Balkans, Romania and Bulgaria, "this investment reflects the bank's continued support for Albania's railway transformation and together with partners we are helping to build a modern, sustainable and connected transport network that will benefit generations to come."

Meanwhile, a few weeks ago, the Albanian government also approved in principle the loan agreement with the EBRD, as the project aims to rehabilitate and modernize the Durrës-Rrogozhinë railway line, a 34 km long segment, which will be electrified and upgraded in accordance with European Union standards. After the completion of this investment, trains will be able to travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h.

The press release states that the project is fully in line with the EU Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans and supports Albania's national strategies for sustainable transport and regional development.

It also reflects the advantages of the EBRD's approach to the Green Economy Transition and is expected to bring significant environmental benefits by shifting freight and passenger traffic from road to rail, reducing carbon emissions and supporting Albania's green transition.
