Albania-Britain strategic partnership - President of the Republic meets Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
During his official visit to Albania, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer, was received by the President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj. The Head of State praised Prime Minister Starmer's visit as very significant in building a strategic partnership between the two countries.
The President of the Republic highly appreciated the presence of the British Prime Minister in the framework of the European Political Community Summit, expressing his belief that this summit will serve as a platform to promote the gradual integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union.
Earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, together with the Minister of the Interior, Ervin Hoxha, paid a visit to the Port of Durres. Starmer saw firsthand the concrete measures and border controls at the Port. Minister Hoxha stated that, together with Great Britain, we have built a history of success in managing illegal migration.
In a report, the Reuters news agency highlights that Prime Minister Keir Starmer traveled to Albania on Thursday, as Britain stepped up its efforts to tackle criminal networks across the Western Balkans that facilitate illegal migration.
According to Reuters, losing ground in the polls to Nigel Farage's anti-immigration Reform Party, Starmer is under pressure to show he can control both legal and illegal immigration.
On his first official visit to Albania, Starmer is expected to announce measures to stop Albanian nationals from returning to Britain after they have been deported and to do more to eliminate money laundering between the two countries.
The prime minister will also announce the expansion of a joint working group on migration to include North Macedonia and Montenegro. The group already includes Albania and Kosovo. In 2022, Albanians made up the largest group coming to Britain in small boats, but numbers have fallen sharply, partly due to a deportation deal agreed by the previous Conservative government.
