New strategic partnership with Greece, Rama: We will resolve outstanding issues
In this week's podcast, Prime Minister Edi Rama has summarized his visits to Abu Dhabi and Greece. In the neighboring country, Prime Minister Rama participated in the Delphi Economic Forum and held a meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Prime Minister Rama said that within the year, Albania and Greece will confirm, through a new Strategic Partnership document, cooperation between the two countries in key areas.
"The stop in Athens was of a different nature, but again related to what I said at the beginning, to the position of Albania and to the desire to see Albania represented at the highest level and to hear our positions and opinions, especially in this case, in an economic forum with an international reputation and prestige, where due to its neighborhood and history, Albania had a special place on that platform, where the main directions of global development, but also of regional development and in this case also of the relationship with the neighboring country, are discussed.
I went to participate in the forum, but I had the pleasure of being received by the Prime Minister of Greece and a valued friend, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with whom we took stock of the progress of the work of the joint group that we have established to provide a final answer to all the issues raised and to take the interstate relationship between Albania and Greece to a new level.
I am very pleased to say that on the part of the Prime Minister there is an absolute will to precisely address with priority all the issues brought forward in order to confirm within this year, through a new strategic partnership document, the very special nature of the relationship between the two countries and on the other hand to support Albania as always, with the exception of some difficult moment, on its path to membership in the European Union. And, having said all this, I am very optimistic and at the same time I am very confident that thanks to the personal commitment of the Prime Minister, Mitsotakis, we will know how to address the issues brought forward and we will strengthen our relationship even more through special care, both for the Greek minority in Albania and for the Albanians in Greece”, said Rama.
The Prime Minister also made a brief visit to Abu Dhabi, where he met with President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed. The visit comes at a time when the Middle East region is facing tensions due to the war in Iran.
"In Abu Dhabi I went to meet a precious and experienced mix of Albania and Albanians, but also one of the most respected leaders in the world today, whom I have the honor to consider my friend, President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed, at a very sensitive moment for his country and for that region involved in a conflict as a result of the attack on the criminal regime of Tehran. It was a visit of solidarity, a visit to confirm the brotherhood that connects us with that country and those countries and on the other hand the belief that the Emirates will overcome this phase and emerge stronger from this great challenge.
I am not exaggerating anything when I say that the President of the United Emirates is a valuable and proven friend of Albania and Albanians, since in his youth he came to Albania not for tourism or for a formal meeting, but to lead the group sent by his father, the late Sheikh Zayed, to help those Albanians who abandoned their homes in Kosovo and flocked to Albania and stayed in large numbers in Kukës, to escape the murderous machinery of Slobodan Milosevic. And ever since then, a relationship has been built with that country, with that people and with that great man that in the last 10 years has taken on a completely different dimension.
It was precisely the President of the United Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, who ordered the disbursement of the largest solidarity fund with Albania after the earthquake, and with that fund an entire model neighborhood was built in Durrës.
On the other hand, we are also connected with the United Arab Emirates in terms of strategic work and projects, but also in terms of a nature that has to do with the growth and strengthening of Albania on the path of its modernization.
"I am very pleased to confirm that from the President and the leadership of the United Emirates, I once again received an extremely positive energy for Albania and confirmation that our friendship is becoming stronger and that our alliance will be strengthened step by step with more cooperation, more projects and more rapprochement between our states and peoples," said Rama.
