The paradox of work, businesses are looking for them, the state is paying them! - Businesses can't find employees, thousands receive unemployment benefits
On one side are businesses desperately seeking employees, facing a significant labor shortage, and on the other side are thousands of individuals receiving unemployment benefits from the state.
According to official data from the Ministry of Finance, during 2024, 832 million lek were spent on unemployment payments, while the initial plan envisaged 764 million lek.
This means 68 million lek more than was programmed in the state budget, reflecting an unexpected increase in the number of beneficiaries or an extension of the benefit period for certain individuals.
Meanwhile, according to data from the Institute of Statistics, in the third quarter of 2024 alone, the number of people receiving unemployment benefits reached 3,576, the highest level since the post-pandemic period of 2020–2021.
In addition, spending on economic assistance, another pillar of the social protection system, has increased significantly.
Last year, 2.68 billion lek were disbursed from the state budget for this category, while the initial forecast was 2.5 billion lek.
This increase indicates an expansion of vulnerable groups in need of support, as a result of the rising cost of living, social inequalities, and lack of access to the formal labor market.
