Gold, how do we compare to our neighbors? We have 14 times less than Serbia. Albania among the last countries in Europe
Official data from the Bank of Albania, included in the annual report for 2023, show that the country's total foreign exchange reserves at the end of 2023 are 5.8 billion euros. This foreign exchange reserve also includes monetary gold. However, by the end of last year, the Bank of Albania had 3.38 tons of gold in its treasury. But how large is this reserve compared to other countries? Meanwhile, based on data from the World Gold Board, in December 2024, Albania had 3.42 tons of gold.
Figures analyzed by "Scan Intel" show that Albania is among the last countries in Europe in terms of foreign exchange reserves in gold. According to the figures, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia and Malta are estimated to have smaller foreign exchange reserves in gold than Albania. For Serbia, meanwhile, the gold reserve is set at around 48 tons, for North Macedonia at 6.9 tons, while for Bosnia and Herzegovina at around 1.5 tons.
Meanwhile, compared to the population according to the 2023 Census, 3.38 tons of foreign exchange reserves translate into about 1.4 grams per capita. But what is this ratio in the Western Balkan countries?
In Serbia, this ratio results in almost 7 grams per capita. The gold ratio per capita in North Macedonia results in 3.7 grams, while in Bosnia and Herzegovina the value is much lower, at only 0.47 grams per capita.
The United States of America holds the first place globally, with its foreign exchange reserves in gold standing at around 8,133 tons. Germany, meanwhile, is first in Europe and second in the world, with 3,352 tons of gold in the Central Bank's vault. Then come Italy, France, Russia and Switzerland, which close the top 5 places on the list.
