Meta brings AI assistant to Europe - New Chatbot to enter market, despite EU

Meta will introduce the new artificial intelligence assistant in Europe, with six languages available to users. The technological innovation finally enters the European market, after problems with the European Union's regulatory system.

American tech giant Meta announced that it will introduce its artificial intelligence assistant across the EU, despite regulatory problems across Europe.

"It took longer than we would have liked to get our technology into the hands of people in Europe, as we continue to navigate its complicated regulatory system. But we are happy to finally be here," Meta said in a post.

MetaAI launched in the US in September 2023, followed by India in June 2024 and the UK in October. Its plan to continue expanding into Europe was halted last summer due to "regulatory unpredictability."

The company halted the launch of its artificial intelligence assistant in Europe after the Irish Data Protection Commission told Meta not to use the data of adult Facebook and Instagram users to train large language models.

Meta announced that over the coming weeks it will "take the first step to make the Meta AI chatbot available in six European languages: English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and German, with the aim of expanding our offering over time."

MetaAI will be available on Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Messenger. It will allow users to, for example, ask a question in WhatsApp group chats, or "discover content that is relevant to their interests."

In total, the tool will begin rolling out in 41 European countries, including those in the EU, as well as 21 other territories, the company said.

Last month, sources at the tech giant criticized Europe's regulatory actions against American companies. They stressed that as a global artificial intelligence revolution unfolds, it is important to foster competitiveness and economic growth to open up transatlantic innovation and cooperation, and that Europe seeks stronger cooperation with the United States and its companies.

In January, CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke about the outcome of the US election, saying that Meta would work with the incoming US president, Donald Trump, to oppose countries that are trying to curb social media platforms.
