"Floor price for the internet" - Operators: The market has been damaged by numerous authorizations. AKEP: There will be a suspension
The large number of authorizations of entities providing internet services before January 2025 has damaged the market. Meanwhile, there are also those that continue to operate illegally. These were some of the issues that were addressed in a meeting held by the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority with internet service providers.
According to representatives from entities that provide this service, the granting of multiple authorizations has disrupted the market, as it has greatly reduced prices, sometimes causing significant losses in income for these entities.
"One of the main problems is the numerous authorizations that have been granted by AKEP until January 2025. Because until January it was very easy to obtain an authorization. This has led to us having many authorizations for the number of residents. We have over 370 that are legal, while in the region there are very few. There are also many ISPs that are illegal. This is a very complicated process, because we have to store consumer data. You have granted many authorizations without checking them. Authorizations should not be granted without respecting the regulation. In Kamëz, after the ISP received authorization from AKEP, it did not receive authorization at all from the Municipality. The problem is that now the companies have started to lower prices, 800 lek for internet, television, significantly reducing our income."
The Chairman of the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority, Gentian Sala, stated that the institution will take the necessary measures to resolve these issues. The measures include increasing inspections of entities suspected of being illegal or completely suspending authorizations until the adoption of the General Authorization Regulation.
Internet service providers suggest setting a floor price for the internet they offer to citizens. Meanwhile, some of the other issues discussed were the differentiation of tax payments, non-declaration of employees, and others.
