Savings from LED street lighting - Benefits for the local budget, municipalities cut electricity costs
The Municipality of Himara will be among the few local units in the country to implement LED street lighting in its road network. The contract for the improvement of public lighting was recently signed, with a value of 174.4 million lek including VAT.
The project envisages the replacement of existing light bulbs with new efficient bulbs with low energy consumption, with the aim of increasing road safety, reducing electricity consumption and improving the quality of life in the urban and tourist areas of Himara.
Currently, the costs in municipal budgets for public lighting are considerable. Meanwhile, according to the Energy Efficiency Agency, LED luminaires and their monitoring and control systems have, in the last decade, offered solutions that significantly improve the energy efficiency of street lighting systems, produce cleaner lighting, controlled and monitored remotely, long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing, pollution-free and easy to maintain.
In a study on the potential for saving electricity in street lighting systems with LED luminaires in the municipalities of Tirana, Durrës and Shkodra, it was concluded that operating and maintenance costs could be reduced by 20% to 50%, compared to existing ones.
Meanwhile, in the Municipality of Has, where the replacement of old light bulbs with LED bulbs has been carried out, energy consumption has been reduced by 74%, while the electricity bill for this institution has been reduced by 60%. At the same time, it is estimated that although the initial investment may be high, its payback time is relatively short due to the savings that come from bills.
