Over 1.52 GW of solar and wind by 2030 - Plan: Around 1005 MW of photovoltaics and 520 MW of wind for climate targets

Our country will need over 1.5 GW of solar and wind capacity by the end of the decade, to meet the scenario foreseen in the new National Energy and Climate Plan. The newly approved document foresees 1005 MW of new photovoltaic capacity and 520 MW from wind by 2030, aiming for a significant diversification of electricity production.
The starting point is very different for the two technologies. According to data from the Energy Regulatory Authority, there were 638 MW of photovoltaic capacity in production by April 2026. Meanwhile, the challenge is even greater for wind energy. Unlike photovoltaics, there are currently no wind farms in operation, while the PKEK scenario calls for 520 MW of new capacity by 2030. This means that the share of wind in the energy mix would have to be built practically from scratch during the remaining years of the decade.
The expansion is not limited to solar and wind. The plan also foresees the development of new hydropower capacities, while the addition of variable sources requires parallel investments in the grid, flexibility and energy storage. Our country continues to have a production system dominated by hydropower plants, which makes supply sensitive to hydrological conditions.
According to PKEK, the development of new solar and wind capacities is one of the main instruments for diversifying production and achieving the objective of 54% of final energy consumption being covered by renewable sources by 2030.
