Serbia seeks to dissolve parliament and call early elections
Serbia's government said on Monday that it has asked President Aleksandar Vucic to dissolve parliament and call early parliamentary elections.
Holding parliamentary elections under improved electoral conditions, following the early voting of December 2023 and amid public calls for early elections, will strengthen democracy and ease political tensions, said Prime Minister Djuro Macut, as quoted by the government in a press release.
The next regular parliamentary elections in Serbia were scheduled to be held by the end of December 2027. By law, early elections must be held between 45 and 60 days after the president calls them.
On Saturday, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) nominated Vučić, whose second and final term as president ends in May 2027, as its candidate for prime minister in the snap elections.
Vucic said over the weekend that he will resign as president after completing some state obligations and planned visits abroad.
The snap parliamentary elections will come nearly two years after a fatal accident at the Novi Sad train station on November 1, 2024, which killed 16 people and sparked a wave of student-led anti-government and anti-corruption protests demanding accountability and challenging Vučić's political dominance.
The student movement plans to participate in the snap elections and is seen as the main rival of the populist SNS.
Serbia's cabinet, led by endocrinologist Djuro Macut, was elected to office in April last year after SNS leader Milos Vučević resigned as prime minister amid student-led protests. The government led by Vučević was inaugurated in May 2024 after snap elections held in December 2023.
The SNS holds 129 out of 250 seats in Serbia's parliament and governs in coalition with the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), which has 18 seats.
