He sent fake links to various citizens in Albania to fill in their bank details, masquerading as a branch of a second-tier bank, in order to withdraw money from their accounts. The State Police caught a 23-year-old Frenchman with the initials AS red-handed at an ATM in Tirana, withdrawing money from an account he had received via the link.
According to the media report, the 23-year-old, after opening the link in France and deceiving hundreds of citizens, had come to Tirana, with the aim of withdrawing money from the bank accounts that he had obtained through fraud. This citizen, through fraud by sending false messages to mobile phones, requested the completion of forms with personal banking data, which he then used to withdraw money through ATMs and banking applications installed on mobile phones. Hundreds of Albanian citizens have fallen victim to this fraud scheme.
Three mobile phones were seized as material evidence. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute other citizens involved in this criminal activity.
The Cybercrime Investigation Directorate at the Criminal Police Department of the State Police assures citizens that it has all the logistical capacities and human resources to track, identify and arrest those who misuse social media spaces to the detriment of citizens and appeals again for greater vigilance from citizens towards any unknown application offered to them on their social networks and to immediately report them to the State Police.
