$302 million military agreement with the US, approved by the Parliament with 74 votes in an accelerated procedure

The Albanian Parliament approved, by an accelerated procedure, with 74 votes in favor, a $302 million loan agreement from the United States for the purchase of military equipment. Discussions on the agreement were held in a closed session because the document contained classified information. Opposition MPs did not participate in the vote, although they declared themselves in favor of the agreement.
The agreement provides for the financing of the purchase of military equipment according to NATO standards. The funds will be disbursed according to the needs of the Ministry of Defense. Albania will have 48 months to activate the funds and up to 12 years to repay the loan.
"This is a historic agreement for Albania, of particular importance for the country's national security that strongly confirms Albania's excellent relations with the US. This funding will be used exclusively for the modernization of the Armed Forces, defense equipment and services according to the highest NATO standards," said Taulant Balla.
At the start of the session, the Speaker of the Assembly, Niko Peleshi, informed the deputies that due to the classified nature of the agreement, the document could only be read within the premises of the Assembly and only after each deputy signed a confidentiality statement.
The agreement enters into force immediately upon approval by President Bajram Begaj.
