Mass protest against overspending - Mallorca faces rising cost of living and housing shortage

Residents of Mallorca took to the streets to protest the effects of overtourism, claiming that the rapid increase in visitors has led to a skyrocketing cost of living and made finding accommodation increasingly difficult for locals.
The mobilization was organized by the local group Menys Turisme, Més Vida ("Less Tourism, More Life"), which calls for immediate measures to limit mass tourism and protect the quality of life of the Spanish island's residents.
According to figures cited by the organizers, over the past two decades the population of Mallorca has grown from around 280,000 to 1.25 million inhabitants, while the number of tourists has increased significantly from 7.5 million to more than 19 million per year.
As they argue, the huge growth of short-term rental accommodations and tourist homes has significantly limited the availability of housing for permanent residents, leading to significant increases in rents and property prices.
“The local population is experiencing an unprecedented housing crisis and a continuous deterioration of living conditions,” the organizers say. According to them, Mallorca has reached its ecological, spatial and social limits, the limits of human pressure and what its inhabitants can now cope with.
The protest is part of a wider wave of mobilizations recorded in recent months in popular tourist destinations in Spain, where more and more residents are calling for stricter measures to address the consequences of overtourism.
