Lin, the oldest settlement in Europe - Archaeological discoveries turn it into an international destination
Archaeological discoveries that reveal Lin as the oldest settlement in Europe have also been echoed in international media, increasing the interest of foreign tourists to visit it. In the first 7 months of the year alone, the village has welcomed over 5 thousand visitors.
"This old, already certified settlement was promoted by prestigious international media. This increased the touristic appeal and curiosity to see it up close. A large number of tour operators, both local and foreign, operate here, bringing tourists, as it has become a main attraction of the Pogradec Municipality. We have released some preliminary figures, where there are 5 thousand visitors, of which 70% are foreigners. But comparing it to a year ago, the figures are relatively high, while we are in the middle of the season" - says Ledjan Zeqollari, Director of Tourism, Pogradec Municipality.
Tourists express their amazement at what they find in Lin and the entire Pogradec area, while appreciating the culinary delights.
"My first time in Albania. Lin is very beautiful, an early settlement in a strategic position. It has beautiful nature, quality food and service. I was in North Macedonia before, this place is fantastic," says an English tourist.
The growing interest in visiting this area has also increased the number of guesthouses. Helga Braka, manager of one of the guesthouses in Lin, says that the number of accommodations is increasing. According to her, visitors come from all over the world, but the largest number are French.
"The hotel is booked all year round. Most of the tourists are from France, Germany, Australia, etc. We are now closing reservations for September - October. There are many requests and curiosity" - says Helga Braka, hostel manager.
Lin is expected to face increased demand from visitors, due to its official confirmation as the oldest settlement in Europe, around 8,500 years old.
