Lessons learned from the floods/ What are the 3 measures that should be taken for agriculture?

Floods are no longer an exceptional event, but a challenge that is recurring year after year. They leave behind flooded lands, lost crops, and farmers who face the same uncertainty every time. But have we learned any lessons from the current floods?
Sinkron Përparim Laze - Educator, water management specialist
"I would say we have learned very little. We are repeating the same mistakes year after year, simply because the same situation is repeated. I am not focusing on technical problems, but simply the fact that interventions for maintenance and cleaning are not done in the summer period when there is no rainfall, but are always done in the period when there is rainfall," said Përparim Laze - Educator and water management specialist.
But on the other hand, what are the 3 measures that should be taken to protect agriculture?
"As a main measure, I would recommend the maintenance of flood protection works, embankments. Repairing damages, or where there is a possibility of building a new one, building a new embankment. Second, the readiness of the field drainage system, which has to do with the repair of the hydropower plants, their modernization. Cleaning the main channels so that the drainage system is functional. And the third measure is the maintenance of high water channels," explained Laze.
Investments in drainage infrastructure, monitoring technology, farmer training, and agricultural insurance systems are essential for more flood-resilient agriculture.
