Negotiations/ Albania asks the EU for an extension of deadlines for conditions - Rama: Intermediate phase after membership for fulfilling food safety criteria

Albania aims to become part of the European Union by 2030, but requires that some of the membership conditions, such as meeting the food safety criterion, be met after membership.
The country has entered the most intensive phase of the negotiations, and aims to fulfill all conditions for the conclusion of the negotiations within two years.
At the Socialist Parliamentary Group meeting to open the new parliamentary year, Prime Minister Edi Rama listed the challenges to becoming part of the European market of 450 million consumers. Rama said that the government is negotiating with the EU to extend the deadlines for fulfilling the conditions, as more time is needed to achieve European Union standards.
"At the moment we are negotiating the interim periods after the moment of accession. Croatia has had an interim phase to meet environmental criteria. The main battle is for the food production sector. We are currently unintegratable in the EU for food safety and we want to ensure an interim phase of 5 years after accession to meet this criterion. At the moment of accession and after the interim period, no food will be able to be sold except in Albania and then it will be imported into Albania. Let's not go to the extreme where everything that is eaten is imported. 10 years negotiating with the EU go by quickly", said Rama.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister once again drew attention to the need to modernize the Albanian Parliament building.
"We have been saying for some time that the administration of the Parliament must be modernized and undergo a technological transformation. We must also set milestones for a clear calendar for the new building of the Parliament of Albania. We must start working on the territory. Re-abandoning the territory as in the past should not be an option for this parliamentary group," the Prime Minister emphasized.
At the meeting of the Socialist Parliamentary Group, the challenges faced by the group in the first session of the legislature were discussed and common milestones for work this year were set.
