Amazon localizes special databases in Europe - 7.8 billion euro project, will respond to consumer concerns

Amazon Web Services launched a new cloud service located entirely in Europe, responding to user concerns about the security of data handled primarily from the US, by offering a database in Europe.
The data centers are physically and legally separate from the company's other servers based in the U.S., the world's largest cloud provider said. That would allow it to operate even if the European Union were to disconnect from the internet or the United States were to ban software exports.
Europeans are increasingly looking for alternatives to the largely US-dominated technology due to concerns about the legal access to data that authorities are allowed. The Cloud Act requires US-based providers to give authorities access to data even if it is stored abroad.
AWS Europe's first data center is being built in the German state of Brandenburg, which surrounds Berlin, said AWS chief technology officer Hanisch. The project, for Germany and other European countries, is backed by investments of more than 7.8 billion euros.
AWS says the cloud will be provided with controls, sovereignty security, and legal protections that meet the requirements of European government and business.
AWS's European "cloud" will be operated and monitored by a German company whose board of directors and advisory board are made up of EU citizens, and all employees will eventually have to have EU citizenship, Hanisch added.
