Where does Albania stand on the employment map in Europe? - We lead the region with 68.9%, but still below the EU average

The employment rate is one of the most important economic and social indicators.
According to INSTAT data, the employment rate in Albania reached 68.9% for the 15-64 age group during the last quarter of 2025, slightly below the European Union average for the 27 member states, which is 71.1%. The data show that Albania remains a few percentage points behind the European average, but at the same time is doing better than some countries in the Balkan region.
When compared to neighboring countries, Albania has a higher employment rate than Bosnia and Herzegovina with 56.1%, North Macedonia with 59.4% and Serbia with 66.3%. This shows that the labor market in Albania has a relatively better performance than some economies in the region, although the gap with the most developed European countries remains considerable.
At the other end of the scale, some European Union countries show much higher employment rates. The Netherlands leads the way with 82.3%, while Malta and Switzerland reach 79.8%. Also, large economies such as Germany register a level of 77.3%, while Denmark and Sweden remain above 76%.
On the other hand, in addition to the countries of the region, some European Union countries also have a lower percentage in terms of employment rate. This includes Italy, which is the European country with the lowest employment rate compared to other EU countries, with an employment rate of 62.4%, followed by Greece, Spain and Belgium.
Comparing these figures shows that Albania is gradually approaching the European average level of employment, but the gap with the continent's strongest economies still remains visible. Improving employment opportunities and increasing labor market participation are considered key factors to further bring the country closer to European standards.
