"The Venice Commission, essential for justice reform" - Rama: Historic contribution that helped us maintain the "compass" of orientation
The Venice Commission has played an essential role in the implementation of the justice reform and the improvement of the Electoral Code. Present at the Conference "30 years of partnership and progress: Albania, the Council of Europe and the Venice Commission", Prime Minister Rama emphasized that the Commission has been an important guide to not losing the compass of orientation towards membership in the European Union.
"Today, the Venice Commission has in its balance sheet the invaluable contribution to the first Constitution of the Albanian democratic state, that of 1998. And also, it has in its balance sheet a series of important interventions in processes where the Commission's opinion has played a decisive role in the direction of the process. It has in its balance sheet two key contributions to the still young history of democratic developments in Albania, the contributions to the Electoral Code, which have fundamentally supported the improvement of this Code and have strengthened the guarantee of democratic standards and on the other hand the historic contribution to the most profound and difficult reform that Albania has made, the justice reform, where the Commission has been an inseparable companion, a guide as always prudent and an authority that has helped us to maintain the compass and orient ourselves in the right direction."
While the former head of the Venice Commission stressed that it is very important that Albania continues to progress in implementing the three principles of the Council of Europe, for full membership in the EU.
"Cooperation with the Venice Commission aims to implement the three main principles of the Council of Europe: democracy, human rights, the rule of law. We must continue to ensure that Albanian democracy complies with these principles. Albania can and must progress for the benefit of its people and for full integration into the European family."
On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Venice Commission and the 30th anniversary of Albania's membership in the Council of Europe, a jubilee conference was held in Tirana, with the participation of senior representatives of the government, justice, independent institutions and international partners.
