Region, cooperation against informal work - Albania, Montenegro and North Macedonia in protection of migrant workers

Albania, Montenegro and North Macedonia signed a memorandum of understanding between the three labor inspectorates of the respective countries. The focus of this signing was labor migration and further cross-border inspections.
"The meeting focused on the conclusion of a project, but more than a project, it was the conclusion of an activity plan that we have had in the last year with the support of GIZ in the framework of strengthening institutional capacities for the treatment of migrant workers. Migrant workers are now a reality for our country, and not only from distant countries such as Asian countries, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Turkey, but the phenomenon of migration is also in cross-border areas, and here we are dealing with workers who work on one side of the border and work on the other side of it. Within the framework of this project, we have held several meetings, and we have concluded cooperation agreements with North Macedonia and Montenegro, to target and hit the phenomenon of informality. But to help the citizens of our countries, within the framework of decent work, to work on every side of the border, based on every formal relationship and security work", said Eljo Muçaj, Chief Inspector of the Inspectorate State Labor.
According to the Chief Inspector, this cooperation with the countries of the region, in addition to the direct benefits it brings to our countries, was also a small-scale exercise within the framework of integration.
"Joint inspections, or cooperation between border states, is a standard process in EU countries or in the Schengen area. Based and inspired by these models, we are piloting it in countries in our region," he said.
