“Only 6.2% of boards in Albania are made up of women” - Gonzato: Corporations should have gender quotas. Diverse ones report higher profits

“Only 6.2% of boards in Albania are made up of women” - Gonzato:

Only 6.2% of boards in Albania are made up of women, a much lower level than that of other corporate boards in Europe and the world.

This was stated by the Executive Director of Women in Boards Albania during the latter's Annual Conference, which emphasized, among other things, that Albania 2030 is one where women and men have equal opportunities to lead, build careers and influence decision-making, whether in businesses or society.

“Globally, women make up approximately 30% of financial corporations. Europe 40%. Only 6.2% of the boards of the country’s 10 largest corporations or companies are made up of women. Boards that have women on board have higher profits than those with a lower percentage. Why do we need these smart boards? Because Albania’s economic future depends on boards. We must not allow half of our talented population to be excluded. Albania 2030 will be one where men and women have equal rights to govern,” she said.

According to the EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, financial corporations should have gender quotas. Gender equality is a prerequisite for Albania's integration into the EU and increasing the presence of women on boards is essential, he said.

“The first step to ensuring that women are heard is to ensure that they are represented in different parts of society. Establishing gender quotas in corporate governance is key. To serve the company as a board member, other women need to be raised and supported. Gender equality quotas will bring more equal and inclusive corporate environments, which will lead to stronger companies. Companies where women are part of the boards have a better financial performance. Albania has made significant progress in terms of women's economic and political empowerment, but strategies are not enough ,” the Ambassador emphasized.

Meanwhile, Balfin Group CEO Edlira Muka said that good governance is important for having a good business strategy.

"Every decision we make to invest in new products requires very important governance principles. Governance enables strategy. To have a good business strategy, we must have good governance. When we talk about governance, we refer to trust. Governance is a bridge to future growth. It helps us take steps forward and it's about people at the end of the day," said Muka.

Also present was the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Entela Ramosaçaj, who said that Albania is modernizing the healthcare system, not only in infrastructure, but by including more women on regional hospital boards.
