Luxury brand imitations banned at customs - Conditions also for citizens'

Traders, as well as citizens who attempt to import counterfeit products into Albania, will be blocked at customs points.

The new trademark law, which entered into force on August 16, strengthens trademark protection, in line with EU standards.

Thus, in implementation of this law, Albanian Customs prohibits the import/export of goods that infringe intellectual property rights and takes measures against counterfeit goods.

In other words, any goods that come stamped with the logos of major global brands, such as Gucci, Armani, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, etc., but are imitations and not official products of these companies, will be blocked at customs.

This will be a blow to the firms that imitate these companies and the traders who until now were importing these low-quality goods without criteria, selling them at cheap prices on the market.

Likewise, travelers arriving in Albania by air, land, and sea are allowed to carry only non-commercial goods in their personal luggage, within duty free limits and without suspicious indicators.

The General Directorate of Customs has an essential role in the protection of intellectual property rights, being on the front line of controlling the cross-border movement of goods.

In accordance with the new laws and the provisions of the Customs Code, Albanian Customs applies prohibitive and seizure measures against goods suspected of infringing intellectual property rights. It cooperates with the owners of rights and the relevant authorities to remove from circulation and confiscate counterfeit goods.

Through the active role of Albanian Customs, a fairer, safer market is guaranteed in line with European standards, protecting the interests of businesses, citizens and consumers.

The new trademark law establishes clear and detailed procedures for the registration, use, transfer and legal protection of these rights and offers more guarantees for consumers and businesses, avoiding the economic and commercial consequences of counterfeit goods or goods that infringe intellectual property rights.
