Losses in the electricity network did not change - April-June / Increase in the transmission system, decrease in distribution

About 320 GWh of electricity was lost to the grid during the second quarter of this year, an amount almost unchanged compared to the same period last year. Data from the Institute of Statistics shows that total losses increased by only 0.1%.
However, the increase in the amount of energy available has caused the weight of losses in the network to decrease. In the April-June period, they accounted for 16.5% of the energy available, down from 17.3% in the second quarter of 2025, with a reduction of 0.8%.
The data shows mixed performance in transmission and distribution. Losses in the transmission network increased by 20.4%, reaching 52.7 gWh, from 43.7 gWh a year earlier. In contrast, losses in the distribution network reduced by 3.1%, from 275.9 gWh to 267.4 gWh.
However, within the distribution network, a strong change in the structure of losses is observed. Technical losses fell from around 202.4 gWh in the second quarter of 2025 to 146.7 gWh this year. The reduction of these losses is usually related to investments in the distribution network or infrastructure modernization. On the other hand, non-technical losses, which mainly include theft, increased from 73.5 gWh to 120.7 gWh.
The loss indicator remains one of the main performance parameters of the distribution operator, as it directly affects system costs and the efficiency of electricity supply.
