"Judges want an additional 40 million euros per year", Minister Malaj: We are preserving the state's finances

Judges and prosecutors are demanding 40 million euros in additional salaries per year. For the Minister of Finance, Petrit Malaj, this is a very high burden on the budget. The head of the Finance Department reacted after representatives of the justice system filed a complaint in his SPAK against the Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury directors across the country, alleging that they are blocking the increase in salaries.
Minister Malaj's full post
"To be reported for enforcing the law, by the guarantors of equality before the law!
Today, a criminal report was filed at the Ministry of Finance against me as the head of the institution, the Secretary General, and the treasury directors throughout Albania.
Reason: We have refused to open the doors of the state treasury to extract from there, without a decision from Parliament, a considerable volume of money, as a salary supplement for judges and prosecutors.
I do not want to engage in any controversy with anyone or clarify the position of the Ministry of Finance, while it has been publicly stated by the Albanian government and representatives of Parliament that no one will prevent the addressing of the salary issue according to the decision of the Constitutional Court. This will happen on September 17, when the law that gives the Ministry of Finance the administrative right to act is approved.
But this has not prevented representatives of the judicial branch from escalating the conflict with the executive branch by signing a criminal complaint that will surely go down in history.
Meanwhile, today I want to let citizens know how much the request of the honorable whistleblowers costs, according to the salary scale:
First Instance Judge
Is: 376,381 Lekë
Requested: 567,421 Lekë
Second Instance Judge
Is: 388,927 Lekë
Requested: 586,335 Lekë
Judge of the GJKKO
Is: 401,473 Lekë
Requested: 605,350 Lekë
The total effect on the state budget with these demands is an additional 40 million euros, every year. But it doesn't end there.
Magistrates are requesting a salary review for the period 2023-2026 with an effect on the state budget of 125 million euros.
"In the meantime, I say to the Treasury directors throughout Albania and the Secretary General, who were reported today along with me, that they must continue to perform their duties calmly and without being intimidated, always rigorously safeguarding the state's finances, guided by the law," Malaj wrote.
