Albanians' savings are "slowed down" - BoA: Modest contraction in lek and foreign currency, but the banking system remains stable

After strong growth at the beginning of the year, Albanians' savings are showing the first signs of a slight cooling. According to newly published data from the Bank of Albania, total deposits included in broad money reached around 1.50 trillion lek at the end of February.
Compared to January, there is a slight decrease of about 5.1 billion lek. This development suggests a normalization of the situation after the strong growth at the beginning of the year, perhaps reflecting a return to consumption or the use of savings by households and businesses.
Where are Albanians keeping their money? Even during February, the main weight remains in the local currency, but with a slight contraction. Deposits in lek fell by about 4.3 billion lek compared to January. The decline is most noticeable in current accounts (transferable deposits), which indicates a greater use of liquidity in this period.
On the other hand, foreign currency deposits also recorded a slight decrease of around 0.8 billion lek. This movement suggests a relative stability in currency preferences, without strong changes towards conversion.
Who is saving the most? Even in February, the main pillar remains individuals and households (other resident sector). They continue to hold the largest share of deposits, although with a very slight increase compared to January in some categories. At the same time, businesses (non-financial corporations) show small fluctuations, reflecting a more dynamic economic activity and more active use of funds.
The February 2026 figures show a slight correction after the January increase, with a modest decline in both lek and foreign currency deposits. However, the overall level remains high, confirming the stability of the banking system and a solid savings base from citizens and businesses.
