Women entrepreneurs, 9.8 billion lek loans in 2024 / AAB: Contribution to economic development. Bank support also increases

Commercial banks are offering more support to girls and women running small and medium-sized businesses. The latest data from the Albanian Association of Banks (AAB) shows that over the years, banks have approved a greater number of loans for this category.
From 2021 to 2024, the number of loans to SMEs run by girls and women has increased significantly, reaching 936 new loans in 2024, with a record value of 9.83 billion lek.
In a span of 4 years, the number of loans granted to female entrepreneurs has increased by 70%, while the money issued by banks in this case has also increased by 212%.
All of these are indicators of the inclusion of more women in the business sector and the embrace of this fact by banks, which have responded positively to the greater number of loan applications from girls and women who run a business. Also, this trend shows the vision and contribution of women entrepreneurs to economic development.
The year 2022 marked the lowest number of loans received, only 140, which amounted to 1.16 billion lek.
On the other hand, according to statistics from the Bank of Albania, new credit granted by banks to small and medium-sized businesses (including women and men) reached 196 billion lek at the end of July.
Access to finance is the first step in starting or growing a business. Despite the increase in the number of female entrepreneurs and their borrowing, they still account for a small percentage of the total number of loans granted to small and medium-sized businesses.
