It drops below 97 lek, when will the euro increase? / The end of the tourist season does not strengthen the European currency
The euro has continued to lose points against the national currency. According to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Albania, one euro was exchanged at the weekend for 96.91 lekë. The weakening of the European currency has continued even though the tourist season has officially ended, with the July-August period marking the highest number of tourists. The euro experienced a slight strengthening in the last days of August and early September, only to continue its decline. On the other hand, foreign exchange inflows are being affected by the revival of remittances and the high values of foreign investments. Emigrants, in the period January-June, have brought 532 million euros.
"The more the euro increases, the more the lek strengthens and the European currency weakens. There is another negative impact that has increased the cost of a large part of tourists, because for those who come with euros, the more it weakens, the more expensive the stay becomes. From this point of view at the level of competitiveness, the weakening of the euro increases the cost of holidays in Albania" - says professor Adrian Civici.
According to the data, foreigners who visited Albania this year spent about 2.1 billion euros in the period January-June and compared to the same period a year ago, tourist income increased by 7.7%. The weakening of the euro during 2025 has been more moderate compared to previous years. The euro recorded its highest level for this year on January 30, when it was exchanged for about 100 lek.
