"Every 3 minutes, Albania experiences 1 cyberattack" - Tafa: We can reduce these attacks by 70% if we govern well in this aspect

Every 3 minutes, Albania experiences 1 cyberattack. This was stated by the Director of the National Cyber Security Authority (AKSK), Igli Tafa, at an event with the participation of all critical and important information infrastructures.
According to him, these attacks can be easily dealt with if we have good cyber governance, while adding that strengthening the security layer in institutions is essential.
"Albania is an attractive place for cybercrime. Every 3 minutes we have 1 cyberattack. Can we cope with all of them? If we govern well, yes. We have 50 cases in ten months where we have been hit, but without affecting the country's critical services, only 1 or 2 cases. If one of the institutions does not standardize governance, the entire network falls. Each of you is part of the chain and a cyber ecosystem must be created. We have extraordinary digital services and extraordinary progress in banking services. Protecting cybersecurity means protecting the country's economy. If we do not strengthen the security layer in institutions, we have failed," said Tafa.
In most cases, cyber attacks are the result of cyber mismanagement. He said that attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, so starting in December, a new approach to controlling critical infrastructure will be implemented.
"In 70%-80% of cases, difficulties from cyber attacks come as a result of cyber misgovernance. If we govern well in terms of cyber, we reduce these attacks by 70%, despite the fact that we have very weak technology. The weakest chain that suffers cyber attacks is the people themselves. The biggest mistakes do not come from experts, but from the employees of these critical infrastructures. Actors are increasingly sophisticated, they can sleep for a long time in your infrastructures and you do not realize it. And technological investments are not enough for this. In December, you should see another approach. We will change the approach to controlling infrastructures. We must build the best cyber defense in the region and Europe", emphasized the Director of AKSK.
Recently, Albania has made an extraordinary achievement in the field of cybersecurity, ranking 15th in the world with 85 points according to the National Cybersecurity Index. This result represents an increase of 39 positions compared to 2023.
