“Building renovation, intelligent investment” - National Plan, Muço: Energy efficiency, economic and environmental benefits

The issuance of the National Building Renovation Plan for public consultation is considered an important step by experts, who say that the benefits that come from energy efficiency are numerous, both economically and environmentally.
"It is better to save than to increase production because increasing production, beyond the source used, in the short term or in the long term, always pollutes. Therefore, the reduction in consumption that comes as a result of increasing efficiency is a very positive investment also in terms of the environment. Taking into account Albania's objectives and ambitions to become part of the European Union and one of these objectives is closely associated with the part of increasing energy efficiency, we have already approved a law, so I see it as very positive, beyond the aspect of costs, that this procedure will have", - says economic expert, Klodian Muço.
The draft foresees deep interventions in the existing stock of public and residential buildings, with the aim of fully decarbonizing the building sector by 2050. These interventions are also accompanied by a financial bill, which is estimated at 25.2 billion euros by 2050. However, apart from the fact that this amount will be spread over time, according to Muço, investments in energy efficiency are considered smart investments.
"A study conducted by All Green Centre a few years ago in the Korça area showed us that in fact the investment in increasing energy efficiency in old buildings from the 1960s had a return on investment of around 6.4 years and you can practically use this investment for about 20 years, so it is called an intelligent investment. Even though it has high costs, it is considered very profitable for all those who do it, be they citizens or families, be they local or central public institutions," says Muço.
The expert requests that this document not remain on paper, but that implementation begin after approval.
"I hope that this time it will not remain on paper and I hope that the investment will follow all the procedures required by the energy efficiency section ," he says.
Applying energy efficiency measures in buildings reduces energy consumption by up to 87.4%, enabling comfortable conditions for families or other building users.
