Exports "halt" after four months of growth/ In September, the decline was estimated at 10.7%. Construction materials were negatively affected

After four months of growth, September 2025 marked the return of declining exports, according to INSTAT figures. Exports of goods reached 27 billion lek, a significant decrease of 10.7%. In the first nine months, exports reached 260 billion lek, a decrease of 7.9% compared to a year earlier.
The decline was mainly influenced by the groups "Construction materials and metals" with -8.4 percentage points and "Minerals, fuels, electricity" with -2.4 pp. "Textiles and footwear" and "Food, beverages, tobacco" had a positive impact. Even in the annual analysis, the decrease was determined by construction materials and minerals, while food and machinery marked an increase.
Imports of goods reached 75 billion lek, increasing by 5.6% compared to a year earlier and by 11.8% compared to August. In the nine-month period, they reached 657 billion lek, with a slight decrease of 1.3%. In September, the growth was supported by “Minerals, fuels, electricity” and “Food, beverages, tobacco”, while “Leather and articles thereof” had a slightly negative impact.
The trade deficit for the month reached 48 billion lek, about 17.8% more than a year earlier. In the nine-month period, the deficit widened to 397 billion lek or 3.6%.
Geographically, in September exports fell most to Spain and Italy, while they increased to Greece and Kosovo. Imports increased from China, Italy and Greece, while they decreased from Turkey and Germany.
Trade with the EU accounts for 57% of total trade, with 74.6% of exports and 51.3% of imports. The main partners remain Italy, China, Greece and Turkey.
The return to decline shows that Albanian exports remain dependent on basic materials, while imports continue to rely on energy and food. Sustainable growth requires more domestic processing, market diversification, and an orientation towards value-added products.
