Agriculture, last measured in 2012! - A base that is not sufficient today for

The Agricultural Census conducted in 2012 was the last conducted in Albania for this important sector of the economy. The vast majority of this register was built by the household sector.

Based on the data from the 2011 Population and Housing Census, approximately 327,000 units were identified that declared agricultural or livestock activity. After a cleaning and processing process, the final list for interviewing in the household sector amounted to 344,647 units, which constituted 99% of the total agricultural units in the country.

For the non-family sector, which included large farms and agricultural enterprises, the Business Register from INSTAT and data from the Ministry of Agriculture were used. Over 750 enterprises with NIPT were identified, around 3,200 large farms without NIPT, as well as other entities such as public and religious institutions that owned or used agricultural land. In total, a register of 348,737 agricultural economic units was prepared. This 2012 census brought for the first time a detailed overview of Albanian agriculture and was used for national policy planning in the years. But since then, the reality on the ground has changed significantly.

Today, a new census is necessary to understand the current structure of agriculture, to update data on land use, livestock activities, and the challenges that farmers face in new economic and climatic conditions. Only on the basis of an accurate picture can fair rural development policies and effective support for the sector that still holds a large share of the Albanian economy be built.
