Electricity production falls - April-June, INSTAT: Imports increased, while exports decreased

The second quarter of the year did not result positively in terms of electricity production, as the hydro situation contributed to a 4.6% decrease in net domestic production, compared to the second quarter of 2024. According to data from the Institute of Statistics for the period April - June of this year, 1,756 gWh were produced, out of 1,840 gWh of energy produced in the second quarter of 2024. This year, production was realized by public hydropower plants at a rate of 40.1%, by private and concessionary hydropower plants at a rate of 43.5%, while 16.4% was generated by solar power plants.
The decrease in production has influenced the increase in energy imports, as well as the decrease in exports. According to data from INSTAT for this period, imports increased by 16.5%, while exports decreased by 4.1%, compared to the same period last year. This has affected the finances of the Albanian Power Corporation, which has increased its energy purchase expenses.
Meanwhile, network losses, including the transmission and distribution networks, reached 320 gWh from 323 gWh, marking a decrease of 1%. The share of network losses in the total available electricity during the second quarter of 2025 is 17.3% from 18% in the second quarter of 2024.
In parallel, electricity use by consumers, in the period April - June 2025, increased by 3.3%.
