Electricity production falls/ July - September, INSTAT: Imports increased by

The third quarter of the year did not result positively in terms of electricity production, as the hydro situation contributed to a 31.3% decline in net domestic production, compared to the third quarter of 2024.

According to data from the Institute of Statistics for the period July - September of this year, 1,075 gWh were produced out of 1,565 gWh of energy produced in the third quarter of 2024.

The decline in production from hydropower plants has contributed to the significant increase in the share of solar energy. According to INSTAT, this year, production was realized by public hydropower plants at a rate of 54.5%, by private and concessionary hydropower plants at a rate of 16.5%, while 29% was generated precisely by photovoltaic plants.

The decrease in production has influenced the increase in energy imports and according to data from INSTAT for this period, imports increased by 65.3%. However, energy exports also increased by 10.8%.

Meanwhile, losses in the network, including the transmission and distribution network, reached 323 gWh from 344 gWh, thus marking a decrease of 5.9%.

In parallel, electricity use by consumers in the third quarter of 2025 decreased by only 0.1%, with businesses contributing to this decline, which reduced electricity consumption by 0.3%. The figures for household consumers, however, are different, with household consumption slightly increasing by 0.1%.
