Albanian education facing challenges, Kaptelli: Salary increase! - Rama: The

Albania has made significant progress in terms of its integration agenda into the European Union. As an important part of the country's development, education is part of the National Strategy for Development and Integration and several other important national policies related to developments in the field of education, as well as based on the need for quality planning.

Education in Albania has evolved through reforms, new curricula, educational staff, etc. The President of the Independent Albanian Education Union, Nevrus Kaptelli, told SCAN TV that even though teachers' salaries have increased, they still need to be brought closer to those of EU countries.

"The situation in education is not at the level it should be and should be assessed. Since July of last year, salaries have increased, but they are the lowest in Europe, according to EUROSTAT figures. The salary of teachers in Albania varies according to work experience and position. The average salary is more than 70 thousand lek, there are also teachers who receive 90 thousand lek, but even more. However, it is insufficient for the tireless work they do, especially at this time when the teaching profession has become very difficult" - says Kaptelli.

Year after year, the rate of decline in students in education is increasing as a result of the decrease in birth rates and high emigration of the young population. In the 2024-2025 school year, over 350 thousand students were registered in formal education. While over 100 thousand students continue their studies in all higher education programs. But what the president of SPASH highlights is that teaching is the least sought-after branch among high school graduates, and for this reason these branches should continue to be stimulated and supported financially.

"It is the least sought-after profession among high school graduates. Many universities in the districts closed their teaching branches because there were no students, this must change. We must make them sought-after professions. The salary increase last year was the largest ever made for education and this must be appreciated, so incentive policies must continue," adds Kaptelli.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Rama and Minister of Education Ogerta Manastirliu, present at the appreciation ceremony for teachers who have made a valuable contribution to Albanian education on the occasion of March 7, Teachers' Day, said that the government's ambition is to raise the average salary of teachers beyond 1 thousand euros.

"Raise your hand if you thought that in 2024 the average salary would be 950 euros. A very significant fact of the economic strengthening of our country but also of the will to strengthen teachers and their family budgets. It is certainly a very dignified salary, but there is no question that it is absolutely not the end, but it is a station on a road where we will once again return to the salaries of teachers, doctors, nurses and all those who serve this Republic. Our ambition is to bring the average salary of teachers beyond 1 thousand euros," said Rama.
