EU delays disconnection from Russian energy - Bloc, awaiting US-Russia deal on

The European Union will delay a long-awaited proposal to end Moscow's fossil fuel and nuclear technology, as US President Donald Trump seeks to normalise relations with Russia and impose his version of peace on Ukraine.

Work on reducing dependence on Russian energy is ongoing but will not be presented this month as planned, a senior EU official said.

"We are still moving forward with the Roadmap, but the timing has changed following recent geopolitical developments. The date will be communicated in due course," he said.

An agenda prepared by the European Commission similarly confirms that the plan will not be presented later this month, as initially communicated.

Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen had pledged to bring forward concrete proposals to eliminate Russian oil, gas and nuclear fuel from the EU's energy systems within the first 100 days of his mandate, a deadline that will now not be met.

The European Union is currently holding talks with the Trump administration, which is expected to increase imports of American gas, while Washington's recent bilateral talks with Russia have added uncertainty over future economic relations between the Kremlin and the West.

“We have to be aware that we could not have reduced our dependence on Russia without US energy,” Jørgensen said. “They have been our friends and I hope, of course, that we will continue to be friends,” he added.
