Student-Teacher Ratio in Albania/ Declining in Public Schools, Rising in Private Institutions
In recent years, Albania has been facing a significant challenge in its education system, the decline in the number of students in schools. According to data from the Institute of Statistics of Albania, the number of students enrolled in pre-university education has suffered a significant decline, and this trend is particularly evident in primary and secondary education.
Meanwhile, on the other hand, this concern is especially noticeable in small towns, where in some cases collective classes also function.
According to data from INSTAT, the teacher-student ratio has been decreasing year after year. This is a positive development, since the lower this ratio is, the better the quality of teaching, but this indicator has been affected by high emigration and the decline in the birth rate, leading to a contraction of the young population. So the change in the ratio is positive, but the causes that influenced this ratio are not so positive.
In public primary education, the number of students per teacher is 15.1, according to 2024 statistics, marking a decrease of 0.4 from 2023. Meanwhile, during the 2022 academic year, the student-teacher ratio was 16.1.
For the 9-year system, the number of students per teacher has gone up to 7.9 during 2024, from 8.2 last year.
Secondary education has also suffered a decrease with 0.5 fewer students, where there are 11.5 students per teacher, while in the previous academic year there were almost 12 students.
On the other hand, in private education this ratio has increased more than in the public sector. For primary and 9-year education, the ratio increases by 0.1 compared to public education. Meanwhile, for private high schools, the student-teacher ratio is lower than in the public sector, with 9.1 students per teacher.
