Vegetable imports hit record highs, as do production costs/Main supply partners

The increase in vegetable prices has not only been a sensation in the market, but it is clearly confirmed by official data on both domestic production and imports. The agricultural production index for vegetables marked a record increase of 21.6% in 2024, bringing the overall price level to 156.3 points, the highest in a decade. Meanwhile, it is worth mentioning the fact that the greatest impact on food inflation has been given precisely by vegetables. But this increase comes at a time when Albania has imported more vegetables than ever before.

According to import data, 61.1 million kg of vegetables were imported in 2024, an increase of 28.9% compared to 2023. The value of these imports reached a record figure of 4.29 billion lek, an increase of over 1 billion lek compared to the previous year. In both cases, both in value and in weight, imports have reached an absolute record in the past year.

The average price per 1 kg of imported vegetables in 2024 is around 70 lek/kg, up from around 69 lek/kg in 2023 and 77 lek/kg in 2022, with fluctuations reflecting the origin of the import and the season. In fact, imports often occur during periods outside the local season.

But which countries have supplied us with vegetables?

When we talk about 2024, the partners at the top of the list with the largest import weight for this product are Egypt, Greece, Germany, Turkey and the Netherlands.

In this context, the clash between high prices of domestic production and the flooding of the market with imported vegetables has created a situation where the consumer pays too much, while the domestic producer often finds himself unprotected in the market. Although imports help cover the need for consumption, they have a double effect as they increase prices and endanger the competitiveness of domestic producers.
