AIPS, more payments in euros during 2026 - Activity in the high-value transfer system continued to increase during the summer months

Domestic euro payments through the AIPS EURO system continued to expand during the first seven months of 2026, confirming that this mechanism remains the main channel for high-value transfers. The latest data from the Bank of Albania show that both the number of transactions and their value have remained at high levels, despite slight fluctuations from one month to the next.
According to official statistics, from January to July, around 288 thousand transactions were carried out, with a total value of 4.34 billion euros. This means that, on average, around 620 million euros were transferred per month through the AIPS EURO system, reflecting the importance that this system has for the Albanian economy.
The monthly performance shows a continuous increase in the number of payments during the first months of the year. From around 31.5 thousand transactions in January, the number increased to 35 thousand in February and reached 39.2 thousand in March. The positive pace continued in April, when around 42.7 thousand payments were registered, while in May there was a slight drawdown, with around 42.1 thousand transactions. However, this decline proved temporary, as in June the system recorded 48.3 thousand transactions, while in July it reached the highest level of the year, with around 49 thousand payments, or around 16.3% more than in May.
The value of payments has also followed a positive trend, albeit with more noticeable fluctuations. After a gradual increase from January to March, the peak of the period was recorded in April, with 733.5 million euros of processed payments. A slowdown was observed in May, while June brought a return to growth. In July, the value of payments remained almost at the same level, reaching 708 million euros. This trend shows that activity in the system continues to remain at high rates even during the summer months.
In practice, this means that more payments were made in July than in any other month of the year, with around 49 thousand transactions, while their total value was slightly higher than in June. This is a normal performance for a system that is used every day by public institutions, banks and businesses for payments of significant values.
AIPS EURO is used primarily by the government for payments in euros, including the repayment of external debt obligations, by businesses for large-value transfers, and by banks for interbank payments. Although citizens do not use it directly in their daily lives, the operation of this system accelerates the circulation of funds and increases the efficiency of payments in euros throughout the economy.
