Do Albanians get insurance when traveling abroad? - AMF: Only 0.1% of citizens think about life and health in another country
This year has not only marked a record for the entry of foreign citizens into Albania, but also for the departure of Albanians abroad. Whether for vacation, work or study, the number of citizens who traveled abroad in the first half of this year has increased by 8.6% compared to 2024.
According to data from the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), almost 4 million citizens are counted as having left the territory between January and June. But how much do Albanians think about their lives and health when traveling?
Despite the influx of emigrants, very few Albanians take out life and health insurance when moving abroad. The latest data from the Financial Supervisory Authority (AMF) shows that the number of contracts for this type of insurance has decreased by almost 11%. Insurance premiums also decreased by 5% in the first half of the year.
Specifically, the number of insurance contracts dropped to 3,743, while claims paid also marked a drastic decrease of 80%.
From this we understand that only 0.094% of those traveling abroad have life and health insurance, or in other words, less than 1 in 1000 travelers has insurance.
In most cases, only students who will pursue studies or training abroad pay for insurance, as it is a criterion required by the institutions of the countries where the student intends to study, as well as those who will travel for work reasons, insurance that is paid for by the relevant company.
The travel life and health insurance policy covers expenses for medical emergencies in case of illness outside Albania, expenses for medications, loss of life, expenses for the return of remains, dental emergencies, refunds the ticket/package in case of trip cancellation, baggage delay, telehealth, and others, depending on the insurance company.
Travel Health Insurance varies based on the amount of coverage, the travel area, and the age of the person traveling.
