Wine barrels are "filled" in France - Production returns to growth

French wine production is expected to rebound by at least 10% this year, after a low in 2024 due to adverse weather conditions. However, the recovery will be limited by the loss of some vineyards in southwest France as part of an industry restructuring program.

France, which competes with Italy and Spain for the position of the world's largest wine producer, is expected to produce between 40 and 42.5 million hectoliters this year, representing an increase of 10%-17% compared to 2024, the ministry said in its initial forecast for 2025.

The projected production rate is slightly below the average of 42.9 million hectoliters over the past five years. One hectoliter is equivalent to about 133 standard bottles of wine.

"In 2025, weather conditions have been more favorable. The dry and hot start to the summer helped reduce disease pressure," the ministry said in a report, adding that the grape harvest could start earlier than usual in many regions.

Last year, heavy rains damaged vineyards and other farmland, while wet conditions favored the spread of disease. This year's increase in production could be particularly strong in the Bourgogne, Champagne, Loire Valley and Charentes regions. But in the southwestern areas, recovery will be limited by the loss of some vineyards, with over 20,000 hectares removed since 2024.

The government has subsidized the removal of vineyards to cope with a surplus of production in the face of falling wine consumption. This approach has been criticized by some producers for making southern areas more vulnerable to fires, as happened with the huge blazes in the Aude region this week.
