Greece, renewable energy is "wasted" - About 10% of production from

An increasing percentage of renewable energy production in Greece is being wasted, especially during periods of low demand. This situation raises questions about the sustainability of existing and new green energy projects, as well as the secure operation of the electricity grid and the costs borne by consumers.

The rhetoric of “free green energy” does not match reality, according to official data. The more green energy is wasted during periods of low demand to avoid power outages, the more the importance of expensive, imported natural gas increases, which is used to cover needs when there is no wind and sun, that is, when production from these sources is reduced.

During the first half of 2025, 9.6% of renewable generation failed to connect to the grid, a significant increase compared to the same period last year (3.5%). In June 2025 alone, rejected renewable generation reached 352 gigawatt-hours, or 12.3% of the total. In June 2024, this figure was only 59.5 GWh, or 2.5%.

Officials say this mismatch between production and consumption can be reduced in two ways: first, by building energy storage capacity and, second, by further electrifying the economy, providing incentives for households and businesses to upgrade their homes and installations. However, the construction of energy storage structures, as expected, is facing delays.

The same data on energy production contradicts claims that Greece is an exporter of clean energy. Energy exports in the first half of 2025 reached 783 GWh, a record level in the last 10 years, but this is due to the significant increase in the share of natural gas in energy production. In the first half of this year, natural gas reached 40% of total production, also a 10-year record, only slightly below renewable sources (46%). Compared to the same period in 2024, production from renewable sources increased by 82 GWh, while from natural gas it expanded by 1,732 GWh.
