China not affected by Trump tariffs - Chinese exports grew by over 7%, despite trade barriers
China is not suffering from the Trump administration's tariff pressure. In July, Chinese exports rose 7.2 percent year-on-year, exceeding market expectations. While imports expanded 4.1 percent, which is the highest growth since July 2024, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs of China.
In contrast, China's exports to the United States fell by 21.7 percent in July, compared with the same month last year, while American shipments to China shrank by 18.9 percent in the same period.
This decline was partially offset by the growth of Chinese exports to Southeast Asian markets, up 16.6 percent year-on-year, as well as to the European Union, up 9.2 percent.
Chinese car shipments to the rest of the world expanded by 26 percent year-on-year, and semiconductors by 16 percent, while Chinese soybean imports increased by 18.4 percent.
Considering the period from the beginning of the year to July, Chinese exports grew by 6.1 percent year-on-year, while imports contracted by 2.7 percent.
Trade relations between China and the US remain tense, but talks between the parties have shown signs of progress.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said last week that Washington and Beijing had reached "the basis for a trade deal" ahead of a key deadline for new tariffs, adding that only technical issues remained to be resolved. But at the same time, he warned that America is not happy that China is still buying oil from Iran.
The current ceasefire in mutual tariffs between the parties expires on August 12.
