Are businesses abusing foreign workers? - Qosja: The Labor Inspectorate has found violations in entities
Due to the emigration of Albanians, entities are facing difficulties in finding employees. The solution is foreign employees.
According to inspections by the Labor Inspectorate, out of the 544 foreign workers inspected, only 7 are informal. But to focus on all foreign workers, are they being exploited in Albania?
Erida Qosja, Director of the Inspections Directorate:
"In fact, I would like to mention the term exploitation in a way that does not extend to all employees. Of course, there are some violations or incorrect implementation of some provisions for employees. The moment a foreign employee has a work permit, he is exposed in the same way as all Albanian employees in that subject, as far as the implementation of his rights is concerned."
But the focus of the inspectorate's controls is also the accommodation conditions of foreign workers, as it is a condition of their contracting.
"We are focused, especially during the tourist season, on verifying and controlling how foreign employees are provided with housing and food rights since they come from other countries and since the work is far from home, of course, some other conditions are also required for these employees. But that is the starting point for contracting their employment. Therefore, we have encouraged that their employment be done through official employment channels, because the chances are that we will have fewer irregularities."
