Trump's decision comes into effect - US bans entry of citizens from 12

A travel ban on citizens of 12 countries to the US has come into effect, amid rising tensions over immigration.

The 12 countries targeted include Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Citizens from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela are partially restricted. Last week, Trump warned that new countries could be added to the list.

The ban comes more than eight years after his 2017 decision denied entry to citizens from predominantly Muslim countries, causing chaos at numerous airports and prompting months of legal battles.

Experts expect the carefully crafted announcement to withstand legal challenges, in part because of its focus on the visa application process. The ban does not cancel visas that have already been issued to citizens of the countries included in the list. However, starting Monday, new visa applications will be denied unless the applicant meets certain specific exemption criteria.

Travelers with previously issued visas should still be able to enter the U.S. even after the decision takes effect.

Trump has justified the ban by claiming that some countries had "inadequate" control over passports and other public documents or have historically refused to accept back their citizens.

Nationals in the countries included in the list pose a "terrorism-related" and "public security" risk, as well as for overstaying their visas.

The US president also linked the ban to a terrorist attack in Colorado that injured several people, saying it highlighted the dangers posed by visitors who overstay in the US. The person charged in the incident is from Egypt, a country not included on Trump's list.
