The number of irregular immigrants apprehended at Albania's border points has suffered a significant decline over the past year.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Interior, a total of 1,540 foreign nationals were apprehended in 2024 while attempting to illegally enter Albanian territory. Compared to 2023, when this number was 6,630, we have a decrease of 5,090 people, or a fivefold reduction.

Data shows that most of these irregular immigrants came from countries in Africa and Asia, including Pakistan, Egypt, Afghanistan, Nepal, Iran, Syria, Bangladesh and Somalia.

Of the total number of people caught, 1,394 were attempting to enter Albania for the first time, while 146 others, despite having failed in previous attempts, tried again, but with the same result.

The significant decline in this phenomenon is attributed to several main factors. Firstly, there has been a reduction in the flow of irregular immigrants who usually cross the border from Turkey to Greece.

Secondly, the new situation created in Syria, where a large portion of Syrian citizens previously sheltered in Turkey are gradually returning to their country, has influenced this decrease.

Finally, cooperation between Albanian and international law enforcement structures has intensified, especially with European agencies such as Europol, leading to a series of successful operations against criminal networks involved in migrant trafficking.
