Rainiest October on record - Spain records double rain in month of deadly floods

Spain has recorded its wettest October on record, culminating in the country's deadliest floods in decades, according to the national weather agency.

More than 220 people died after torrential rains on October 29 caused severe flooding south of the city of Valencia in eastern Spain. 78 people are missing, although the government believes some of them may match some of the 48 bodies yet to be identified.

Scientists say extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Meteorologists believe that the warming of the Mediterranean, which increases water evaporation, plays a key role in worsening the torrential rains.

The rains that caused the floods were 12% heavier and twice as likely compared to the period before global warming, according to the World Weather Attribution group of scientists.

Peninsular Spain saw an average of 147 millimeters (mm) of rain this October, almost double the average amount in a normal October, the weather agency added.

Turis, a town 15km away from Valencia, where a year's worth of rain fell in one day, broke the national record for rain in one hour with 184.6mm.

With 771 mm of rain in 24 hours, Turis was also close to breaking the record of 817 mm recorded in 1987 in the nearby town of Oliva.

The weather agency said October was a warm month overall, with an average temperature 0.9°C above that of peninsular Spain of 15.5°C.
