Spain, expecting an extreme summer! - Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius are

Spain is bracing for an unusually hot summer after a May with record temperatures. The national weather agency AEMET said there is a 60% chance the country will be hotter than average from June to August.

This follows scorching temperatures at the end of last month, when the thermometer reached 40.7 degrees Celsius at the airports of Cordoba and Seville, and 37.5 degrees Celsius in Zaragoza. Temperatures on May 30 averaged 24.08 degrees Celsius, the highest figure for May since records began in 1950.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), there is no doubt that "human-caused greenhouse gas emissions have led to increased frequency and intensity of temperature extremes."

The last three summers have been Spain's hottest ever recorded, and 2025 looks set to continue that trend. The chance of a warmer-than-usual summer increases to 70 percent along Spain's Mediterranean coast and the Balearic and Canary Islands.

The east coast, including Barcelona, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, is expected to experience frequent "tropical nights", with temperatures not falling below 20°C and many consecutive days above 35°C.

The summer forecast comes after AEMET issued warnings for June 17 in the villages of Cordoba and Seville, where temperatures could reach 41°C.

To help people prepare for increasingly hot summers, Spain's Ministry of Health published a new detailed map last year. It divides the country into 52 provincial areas into 182 meteosalud zones (or metropolitan health zones), providing a color-based warning system for each.

Heat alerts range from green or no risk to red or high risk to health and life. In addition to the color, they come with information about sun exposure, hydration, and symptoms of heat-related illnesses. There is even an English-language version of the official website to help inform tourists, students, and new residents about the dangers.

This year, Spain's annual heat plan complements the new zones with a guide that advises different administrations, health professionals and citizens when intense heat hits.
