Trump, ready to extend the deadline for the purchase of TikTok - American leader

United States President Donald Trump said he would give Chinese company ByteDance more time to sell TikTok's US assets if a deal is not reached by June 19. The app is used by 170 million Americans.

Trump said he had a "weakness" for the app, as it helped him win over young voters in the 2024 presidential election.

The White House has so far twice suspended the implementation of the TikTok ban, which was originally supposed to take effect in January.

A deal was in the works that was supposed to separate TikTok's American operations into a new firm headquartered in the United States and majority owned by American investors, but it was suspended after China indicated it would not approve it following Trump's announcements of high tariffs on Chinese goods.

Democratic senators argue that the American leader does not have the legal authority to extend the deadline and suggest that the agreement under consideration would not meet legal requirements.

A source close to ByteDance's US investors said last month that efforts for a future deal are continuing, but the White House and Beijing will need to resolve the tariff dispute first.

Trump said China was willing to reach a deal, citing the impact that 145% tariffs on Chinese goods were having on its economy.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on June 12 that US and Chinese negotiators, who met in London that week, did not discuss TikTok, despite the June 19 deadline approaching.
